VK NG THE LABEL x MIND SOCIETY

December 05, 2018

A few months ago, as part of a Q+A on Instagram, I mentioned that one of my goals was to collaborate with Melbourne creatives come the new year. It has always been a dream of mine to work with other young creatives whose hustle I really respect.

I didn't think it would be something I could organise in the near future, as I had a million things to worry about with the Christmas season coming up, website upgrades and the new collection I'm designing. Even as I am typing this, I am running through a check-list of things I need to have completed by the end of the week.

(I have my life planned out by the hour as of recent)

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But if you knew me, you would know that I'm a hardcore doer. I aggressively chase things if I've set my sight on it, and develop tunnel-vision as a result. I rarely take no for an answer, and tbh that's a fatal flaw sometimes. When it comes to business however, I think it's one of the reasons I've kept going when everything that could go wrong does.

Fortunately, I found David (Mind Society) through a mutual Instagram connection. As soon as I saw his work, I knew we had to do a collaboration. We met in person for a working lunch and by the end of it, I was already thinking of all the things I could push to next year just so I could work with him. By far, his talent, drive and grounded nature was what sealed the deal for me.

The planning process was a nightmare however. Models fell through, MUAs cancelled, and venues were difficult to deal with. I honestly could not remember how many nights I stayed up, hands-wringing and damn near tears thinking it was a mistake to take on a project when I had so many other things going on with the label. I was swimming in self-doubt and with only 4 days before the planned shoot, I genuinely thought that I had made a mistake thinking that I could pull this off.

Somehow I managed to find Sue and Love, who both agreed to take on the project despite the budget constraints and short notice. I literally found the rest of my team at the eleventh hour, and before I knew it, it was the day of the shoot.

Thank you

I will forever be grateful to the whole Mind Society team (David + Kurt) for being absolute pros on the day. They went about the set up and shoot in a way that genuinely made me appreciate all the hardwork that goes into filming. On top of that, they kept me calm and made me laugh even though I was initially a  fiery ball of anxiety.

I'm thankful for Sue (@suepark7_) + Love (@lovehawkridgemua), who pulled through and blew me away with their work. These ladies have literally never met me before this, only saw my proposal once and yet still knocked it out the park in the most effortless way possible. Tommy (@_tommykuo), who essentially was the thread that connected me to everyone I've worked with so far, came and shot all the behind-the-scene photos and offered some much-needed moral support for me.

Lastly, all my gratitude to my partner, who is the only one who saw what a hot mess I was during the entire lead up to this. Thank you for driving in to make sure I was not in a fetal position in some corner during the photo shoot. (Honestly, my crazy ass just needs to see him and I feel all kinds of calmness, so there's that).

All photos belong to Tommy Kuo and reposted with permission.
